Extreme flood events and the ramifications for the local residents are a recurrent topic in the media and thus an issue pupils are aware of. Due to the rekindled discussion about potential effects of anthropogenic impact on climate change, a renewed public interest in climate-related extreme events can be observed. As a natural disaster like floods is not only determined by nature but also by human activity, there is a range of topics that can be addressed: Which areas are jeopardised? In how far does human activity affect the flood risk? Which precautions can be taken? Remote sensing data and geographic information systems are very helpful in answering these questions.

In the teaching unit “Floods”, the pupils are working within a computer-aided and interactive learning module while using different remote sensing data. A digital elevation model is central to this teaching unit.
